How many times have I heard this? In fact how many times has any student nurse heard that?
It's usually followed by someone doing something they shouldn't be doing, often pertaining to Manual Handling. I wish people wouldn't say that to me because it puts me in the impossible position of knowing what went on and I would have to report it if something went wrong.
So from now on I declare that I will no longer ignore or stand back or assist.
Well a student can dream... Can't I? Truth is we are instilled with a 'sit down, shut up' mentality. 'This is the way we do it here' That's your response if you question their practice. Sometimes it has gone as far as I ignore your bad practice, you give me a nice write up.

It wasn't related to manual handling but to other areas of poor practice but I actually did bring up something I saw on placement to my supervisor's supervisor. It wasn't easy but at the end of the day, I'm glad I did it - it didn't relate directly to the person who was responsible for marking my work (luckily) but it was another professional. I think it depends on what you are seeing to some extent!
Oh yes, so many times...
Manual handling tends to get a bit silly in mental health, as most of our patients teend to be rather resistive. Either they are elderly with dementia, and get very confused and scared by hoists, or they are younger and have put themselves on the floor deliberately and so don't want to help us get them up...even if they are laid in front of the main door and are going to have to shift one way or another. So our techniques tend to go out the window...
Sometimes I wonder if any of the stuff we get taught is of any use at all. I'm just sick of hearing that line. Well there's some things I ignore because it's not helpful...
